Turntables — buying guide

Choosing a turntable

A turntable plays vinyl records through a cartridge and stylus. Its output needs an appropriate phono stage, either built into the turntable or provided elsewhere in the system. Setup and cartridge compatibility affect day-to-day use.

What to check before buying

  • Check whether a phono preamplifier is built in.
  • Review cartridge type, supported speeds and replacement stylus options.
  • Allow a stable, level surface and suitable clearance for the dust cover.
