Your first DIY speaker kit: what to check before you build

← Back to audio guides

A first speaker build is easier to plan when you know exactly what the kit includes and what you need to supply yourself. Start with a documented design and a realistic list of tasks, rather than choosing parts by appearance alone.

Start with the kit contents

Check whether the listing is for one speaker or a pair, and whether cabinets are included. A component kit can contain drivers and crossover parts while still requiring you to build or buy the enclosure. For example, Dayton Audio describes its BR-1 component kit as a cabinet-free project that also requires crossover assembly. Read the specific kit’s parts list and assembly guide before ordering.

Match the project to your workspace

Make a checklist of the work involved: cabinet assembly, finishing, crossover assembly and internal wiring. Then compare that list with your tools and experience. A pre-cut cabinet does not automatically mean every other part of the project is assembled. Ask for clarification if the listing leaves a step unclear.

Treat the design as a complete system

Follow the supplied cabinet drawings, wiring diagram and component list. Substituting a driver or changing an enclosure is a design decision, so check with the kit designer before making changes. Keep a printed copy of the instructions beside your build and tick off each part as you unpack it.

Plan the rest of the setup

Before buying, identify the amplifier and source you will use, the space available for the speakers and your total project budget. Include finishing materials, cables and any parts not listed in the kit. Send the kit link and your equipment details to our team if you would like help checking the shopping list.
