Room measurement: a beginner’s starting point

← Back to audio guides

If you want to understand your listening setup more clearly, measurement can give you a repeatable starting point. Keep the first session simple: document the current arrangement, learn the software’s basic measurement process and change only one thing at a time.

Begin with a documented measurement setup

miniDSP’s acoustic-measurement guide uses its UMIK-1 USB microphone with Room EQ Wizard (REW). The UMIK-1 has a calibration file associated with its serial number. Use the manufacturer’s setup instructions and the correct file for your microphone and measurement orientation; do not substitute a file from another unit.

Record your starting conditions

Note the speaker positions, microphone position, listening position and relevant playback settings. Give each measurement a meaningful name so you can identify it later. A photograph or a simple sketch can be more useful than trying to remember the arrangement after moving things.

Make a baseline before experimenting

Follow the software and microphone documentation for the initial measurement. miniDSP’s guide explains how REW generates a test sweep and displays the captured response. Save that first result before making changes. It is your reference for the next session, rather than a score that the system has to “pass”.

Compare one change at a time

Try a single adjustment, document it and repeat the same process. Keep the graph settings consistent when comparing results. Avoid drawing a conclusion from a differently scaled graph or from measurements taken under different conditions. If you are unsure how to interpret a result, save the measurement file and ask for help before applying correction settings.

Know what the measurement does

A measurement microphone captures information; it does not by itself apply equalisation or room correction. Those changes require an appropriate playback or processing system. You can start by learning the measurement workflow before deciding whether additional equipment is useful.
